Event for the Traditional Threshing in Skyros
Font Size   A-   A+

Before the mechanization of farming, the threshing of the local variety of fava beans was conducted by the use of Skyrian horses, a practice that has been abandoned in the last decades. On 26 of June 2011 in the farm ‘Mouries’ in Kalikri of Skyros, the Life  project, the Cultural Association of Skyros and the Farm of Skyrian horses ‘Mouries’ organized an event about the traditional method of threshing in Skyros. The event was aiming in demonstrating and revealing the importance of the traditional methods and the usefulness of the Skyrian horses in this process. The visitors had the opportunity to watch the entire process of the threshing with the use of the traditional tools. The event was attended by many people and because of the great success it was repeated on July 17th.

We hope that this event brought memories to the elderly people and that it was an opportunity for younger people and visitors of Skyros to learn about an important part of the island’s cultural heritage.
